El martes 7 de julio, los dirigidos per Néstor Lorenzo compitieron por el paso directo a los Cuartos de Final de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026 ante Suiza.

Colombia midió fuerzas frente los europeos, selección con la que no consiguió seguir avanzando, dejando un resultado de 4-3 desde el punto penal.

Posterior al encuentro, el director técnico de la Selección Colombia ofreció la conferencia de prensa habitual a los medios de comunicación presentes en el Estadio de Vancouver, Canadá:

Pregunta 1: consulta sobre lo que le hizo falta a a la Selección para ganar 

Bueno, sin duda que hacer gol. Sabíamos que iba a ser un partido bastante cerrado, muy táctico, muy parejo. De todas maneras creo que merecimos un poco más en los noventa, por las intenciones que tuvimos, los remates. A medida que se fue alargando el juego, los equipos fueron perdiendo energía y terminó en el empate final que derivó a los penales. 

Pregunta 2: sobre los cambios en el plantel nacional 

Dos cosas: teníamos miedo que en alguna llegada tarde nos quedáramos con uno menos y la energía también. 

A parte cambiamos de sistema. Jugamos con dos en el medio, con ‘Juanfer’ flotando atrás del 9 y pasamos a un 4-2-3-1, pensamos por las bandas. Teníamos que preocuparlos a ellos….casi llegan los goles así, Campaz la tuvo y bueno, lamentablemente no se dio. 

Pregunta 3: acerca de la ilusión y mensaje a la hinchada de Colombia 

Agradecido a usted y a todos los que hicieron ese esfuerzo. Gracias por que se subieron a la ilusión que nosotros mismos fuimos generando y que tuvimos. 

Lo del gol nos ha sucedido bastante en determinados momentos….Me acuerdo de los partidos previos a la última fecha de eliminatoria donde nos tocaba Bolivia y Venezuela, veníamos también con falta de gol, con llegada, pero no. 

A mí me interesa que el equipo juegue bien, que genere opciones. Hoy creo que tuvimos 17 tiros al arco, intentos como le dicen, es mucho y no convertir se paga. 

La última fecha de eliminatoria hicimos nueve goles en dos partidos con Bolivia y Venezuela, se abre el arco, los muchachos están más finos, son jugadores que hacen goles en las ligas, son goleadores de liga. No hay nada que reprochar, simplemente que a veces entra y a veces no. Y también los arqueros, este mundial ha mostrado una calidad de arqueros impresionante.

Question 1: On what the team lacked to secure the victory

«Without a doubt, it was scoring. We knew it was going to be a very tight, highly tactical and evenly matched game. Even so, I believe we deserved a little more over the ninety minutes because of our intent and the number of shots we created. As the match went on, both teams began to lose energy, and it eventually ended in a draw that was decided by penalties.»

Question 2: On the changes made to the team

«There were two reasons. First, we were concerned that a late challenge could leave us with one player less on the field. Second, there was the physical aspect and the players’ energy levels.

We also changed our system. We started with two midfielders and Juanfer playing behind the striker, then switched to a 4-2-3-1, looking to attack through the wings. We wanted to cause them problems out wide. We almost scored that way—Campaz had a great chance—but unfortunately it didn’t happen.»

Question 3: On the team’s dream and a message to the Colombian supporters

«I’m grateful to you and to everyone who made the effort to be here. Thank you for believing in the dream that we ourselves created and pursued throughout this journey.

The issue of finishing has happened to us at different moments. I remember the matches before the final round of the World Cup Qualifiers against Bolivia and Venezuela. We were creating chances but struggling to score.

What matters most to me is that the team plays well and creates opportunities. Today we had 17 shots, or attempts as they’re called. That’s a significant number, and when you don’t convert your chances, you pay the price.

In the final round of the Qualifiers we scored nine goals in two matches against Bolivia and Venezuela. Sometimes the goal opens up, the players become more clinical, and these are footballers who score regularly for their clubs—they are league goalscorers. There’s nothing to blame them for. Sometimes the ball goes in, and sometimes it doesn’t. We should also acknowledge the goalkeepers. This World Cup has showcased an outstanding level of goalkeeping.»
