El viernes 3 de julio, los dirigidos per Néstor Lorenzo compitieron por el paso directo a los Octavos de Final de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026 ante Ghana.

Colombia salió al campo con una clara vocación ofensiva y, aprovechando la velocidad por las bandas, comenzó a generar peligro sobre el bloque defensivo africano. La insistencia tuvo recompensa al minuto 14, cuando Jhon Arias capitalizó una asistencia de Luis Javier Suárez para abrir el marcador y decretar el 1-0 en el estadio de Kansas City, Estados Unidos.

En el periodo complementario, el combinado nacional sostuvo el protagonismo, administró la posesión del balón y siguió inquietando a la defensa rival con constantes llegadas al área.

Posterior al encuentro, el director técnico de la Selección Colombia ofreció la conferencia de prensa habitual a los medios de comunicación presentes en el Estadio de Kansas City, Estados Unidos:

Pregunta 1: sobre los cambios en el partido 

“Hubo varios que estuvieron con estados gripales y estuvimos previendo también que podían tener un desgaste mayor. Pero, fue un cambio táctico en ese momento y bueno, después otro cambio táctico con Juan, pero táctico te digo por las características, porque entra, sale un volante, entra un volante. Debido a las características de uno y de otro, un poco cambia. Entonces pensamos que era lo que necesitaba el partido en ese momento”. 

Pregunta 2: acerca de la evolución del equipo

“No, creo que la manera que concibo el fútbol es asociado, es colectivo, es armar de pronto pequeñas sociedades en distintos sectores del campo, pero después todo eso tiene que ser parte de un todo y creo que la selección viene trabajando desde el primer minuto en pos de conseguir un funcionamiento colectivo que haga destacar a las individualidades, no que la individualidad haga destacar al colectivo, ¿no? Creo que eso fue desde el principio, me acuerdo cuando decían de Lucho, de James, de los jugadores que se destacan por su calidad individual, le dan lo mejor que tiene al equipo y creo que de eso se trata, ¿no? El juego, este juego tan lindo que es el fútbol, trata de jugar bien y asociadamente”.

“We celebrate a lot the passion of people, Colombian people, from the beginning they support us and they follow us wherever we go, so very grateful with them for always”.

Pregunta 4: relacionado con el rendimiento de Gustavo Puerta

“Está siendo un gran Mundial, creo que, bueno, a Gustavo lo citamos por primera vez cuando estaba en el Bogotá, en segunda división de Colombia y bueno, ahora en el Racing de Santander también, lo fui a ver cuando estaba en el Hull City, todos equipos chicos o de segunda, pero siempre le descubrimos en él a un volante completo, inteligente, con personalidad a pesar de su edad, interpreta muy bien los tiempos del juego y nos da, de pronto nos da pausa. De pronto nos acelera el juego. Clarifica, creo que se está convirtiendo en un jugador muy importante”. 

Pregunta 5: el balance del juego 

“Después de generar varias situaciones y no convertir, me gustó como defendimos, o sea, valoro el hecho de no haber sufrido llegadas claras del rival, creo que la defensa tan subida, con los laterales que van siempre. Los centrales, Lerma, Puerta (..) todos, la verdad que hicieron un trabajo muy bueno y permitieron que el resultado se mantuviera aún siendo escaso, pero no sirviera para el triunfo». 

Pregunta 6: sobre la logística y días de descanso

“Y sabíamos que iba a ser así, la logística y sobre todo porque empezamos el último día nosotros, o sea, nosotros creo que el Mundial empezó el 10 y nosotros jugamos recién el 17, o sea que empezamos tarde para el primer partido, pero después, ese día, esos días se van a ir descontando a medida que se vayan, vayamos avanzando.

Nos pasó también en la Copa América algo parecido, es duro, es duro porque cambias de clima, cambias de país, de usos horarios, de acuerdo a si estás más al este o más al oeste, y bueno, también hay un tema que no se puede entrenar, por ejemplo, en el estadio, hoy los que no jugaron no pueden hacer nada, ayer tuvieron que hacer poco por las dudas que les toca jugar, como el caso de Luis Suárez que entró a los 10 minutos. No es fácil, la logística no es fácil, pero bueno, hay que adaptarse, a todos les pasa lo mismo, nosotros vamos a tener a lo mejor un poquito menos de recuperación entre partido y partido, justamente porque empezamos más tarde el primero, el partido con Uzbekistán”. 

Pregunta 7: relacionado con el siguiente rival 

Sí, es Suiza, Suiza, Suiza, el orden, pero con buenos jugadores, de mitad de cancha para adelante, juega muy bien, tiene jugadores buenos en la organización del juego, tienen un funcionamiento muy aceitado hace muchos años, y bueno, va a ser un partido muy duro, va a ser un partido muy difícil el de Suiza». 

Pregunta 8: acerca de la salud de los jugadores 

«No, no, James está bien, James está bien, no tiene lesión, no tiene lesión, John Córdoba sintió un pinchazo, pero no se sabe la gravedad de esa lesión hasta que no se haga un estudio. Es el único que terminó así, después hay alguna contusión, algún golpe, algún dolor menor». 

Pregunta 9: relacionado con las líneas defensivas de Colombia 

«Ellos son defensores que juegan muy bien, hoy tuvieron una responsabilidad muy grande, los defensores también, porque jugaron gran parte del partido en mitad de cancha, manejando el balón, en la circulación, y cuando se perdía había que salir a jugar un mano a mano, o en una transición defensiva, y lo hicieron muy bien. Después dentro del área también, referenciaron bien a los atacantes rivales, así que creo que, o sea, más allá de que me gusta ver jugar a Colombia con el balón y en ataque, y generar situaciones lindas de gol.

Hoy destaco mucho esa seguridad defensiva, a pesar de no marcar tantos goles, o sea, con uno solo nos alcanzó para tener la victoria, que creo que es bien merecida».

Question 1: On the substitutions made during the match

«Several players were dealing with flu-like symptoms, so we anticipated they might experience greater physical fatigue. The first substitution was tactical, and later we made another tactical change with Juan. By tactical, I mean that one midfielder came off and another came on, but each player has different characteristics, which naturally changes the dynamics of the game. We believed those adjustments were exactly what the match required at that moment.»

Question 2: On the team’s development

«The way I understand football is through teamwork and collective play. It’s about building small partnerships in different areas of the pitch, but ultimately everything has to work as one unit. Since day one, the national team has been working to develop a collective style of play that allows individual talent to shine—not the other way around.

I remember when people only talked about Lucho, James, and other players known for their individual quality. Those players contribute the very best of themselves to the team, and that’s what football is all about. This beautiful game is about playing well together and playing collectively.»

Question 3: On the Colombian supporters

«We truly celebrate the passion of the Colombian people. From the very beginning, they have supported us and followed us wherever we go. We are extremely grateful for their unwavering support.»

Question 4: On Gustavo Puerta’s performances

«He’s having an outstanding World Cup. We first called Gustavo up when he was playing for Bogotá FC in Colombia’s second division. Later, we continued following him at Racing de Santander, and I also watched him during his time at Hull City. They may not have been the biggest clubs, but we always recognized him as a complete midfielder—intelligent, composed, and full of personality despite his young age.

He understands the rhythm of the game very well. Sometimes he slows the tempo, other times he speeds it up. He brings clarity to our play, and I believe he is becoming a very important player for the team.»

Question 5: On the overall performance

«Even though we created several chances without converting them, I was very pleased with the way we defended. I value the fact that we hardly allowed the opponent any clear scoring opportunities.

Our high defensive line, the full-backs constantly pushing forward, and the work of the centre-backs, Lerma, Puerta and everyone else was outstanding. Their performance allowed us to protect what was a narrow lead, but one that was enough to secure a deserved victory.»

Question 6: On the logistics and recovery time

«We knew it was going to be like this, especially because we started our tournament later than most teams. The World Cup began on the 10th, but we didn’t play our first match until the 17th. That meant we had a later start, but as the tournament progresses, those extra days gradually disappear.

We experienced something similar during the Copa América. It’s demanding because you’re constantly changing climates, countries and time zones, depending on whether you’re travelling east or west. There are also restrictions—you can’t always train in the stadium, for example. Today, the players who didn’t feature couldn’t do much, while yesterday those who might play had to manage their workload carefully, as was the case with Luis Suárez, who came on after ten minutes.

The logistics are certainly challenging, but every team faces similar circumstances. In our case, we’ll probably have slightly less recovery time between matches simply because our tournament began later with the game against Uzbekistan.»

Question 7: On the next opponent

«Yes, Switzerland are a very well-organised team with quality players, especially from midfield forward. They play very good football, have excellent players capable of controlling the game, and they’ve built a well-established system over many years.

It will be a very demanding and difficult match.»

Question 8: On the players’ fitness

«James is doing well. He’s fine and doesn’t have any injury. Jhon Córdoba felt a sharp pain, but we won’t know the severity until he undergoes medical examinations. He’s the only player who finished the match with that concern. The rest only have minor knocks, bruises or slight discomfort.»

Question 9: On Colombia’s defensive performance

«Our defenders are excellent footballers, and today they had a tremendous responsibility. They spent much of the match playing around the halfway line, helping to build attacks and circulate possession. Whenever we lost the ball, they had to defend one-on-one situations or deal with defensive transitions, and they handled those moments extremely well.

Inside the penalty area they also marked the opposition forwards effectively. While I always enjoy watching Colombia dominate possession, attack and create scoring opportunities, today I especially want to highlight our defensive solidity.

Even though we only scored once, that goal was enough to earn a well-deserved victory.»
